COGNITIVE BEHAVIOURAL
THERAPY (CBT)

 What is CBT?

CBT, or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, is a talking therapy that has been proven to help treat a wide range of psychological health conditions. CBT is a combination of cognitive therapy (examining the things you think) and behaviour therapy (examining the things you do).

CBT looks at how we think about a situation and how this affects the way we act. In turn, our actions can affect how we think and feel. If you perceive a situation negatively this may lead to negative emotions as a result, and those bad feelings might lead you to behave in a certain way which may further reinforce the difficulties..

Negative emotions or thinking patterns can be a result of an event or possibly several events over time and from as early as childhood. Over time you might come to believe these assumptions, and eventually these negative thoughts become automatic within your daily life. This way of thinking could be effecting how you feel at work, in your relationships or in your general life.

It can sometimes hard to recognise negative thinking and this may only become evident when things start to go badly for you. CBT is designed to help identify negative thinking and understand the cause to improve the way of thinking and well as developing robust skills to overcome any difficulties.

How does CBT work?

Cognitive behavioural therapy looks to help you make sense of what can feel like an overwhelming problem by breaking it down into more manageable parts.
Dr Bradley Mann Psychologist London

These smaller parts consist of your thoughts, feelings, emotions, actions, the situation and even physical sensations. These elements are interconnected and can often trap you in a negative spiral. Your thoughts about a certain situation can often affect how you feel both physically and emotionally, as well as how you act in response. For example, if your  relationship has come to an end, you may think you have failed and that you are not capable of being in a functional relationship. These thoughts can result in you feeling lonely and lacking energy. When you feel like this, you are unlikely to want to socialise or go out and meet new people. This negative spiral can then trap you into feeling isolated and unhappy.

CBT helps breaks these negative spirals, by challenging your thoughts and testing things out in reality. The approach is tailored to your individual needs and typically we will formulate together and develop a plan to tackle the issues.

"There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so."
